by DrJudy on

Difficult with difficult people ideas, strategies and tips to help you in dealing with difficult people!

Difficult people often seem to make talking and communicating with them very frustrating, stressful and demanding. Dealing with difficult people requires a greater awareness of how both yourself and that difficult person are communicating.

DIFFICULT PEOPLE AND THEIR NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

In dealing with difficult people previous posts we considered some areas of communication in handling difficult people. In fact, these strategies are important in dealing with people overall. For example, the importance of being aware of body language and non-verbal communication is vital. Since over 70% to 80% of our the way we communicate with others is through non-verbal communication, then not being aware of this non-verbal communication is similar to being blindfolded.

IT IS NOT WHAT YOU SAY BUT HOW YOU SAY IT

Another aspect of communication to be aware of in dealing with people relates back to verbal communication. Sometimes what is more important than the words that a person is saying, is the way they are saying it. The tone of their voice. For instance, if I say to you ‘I’m not upset’ and the tone of my voice is light, cheerful and upbeat then my words are matching closely to my meaning and feelings. However, if I say the same words ‘I’m not upset’ but the tone of my voice is low, downbeat and not at all cheerful then my words and tone of voice of my voice are not matching at all.

LISTEN WITH YOUR EYES IN DEALING WITH PEOPLE

Some of your greatest learning in dealing with people and dealing with difficult people, is to pay closer attention to the tone of their voice and their body language, than to the actual words that they are saying. However, when you are dealing with people who you find frustrating, irritating, vexing and galling – then your ability to hear beyond the words and see what they are really saying from their body language and tone of voice is much lower. Because these people play with your emotions your ability to leave your emotions behind and truly focus on their ‘real’ communication is just not working.

In the next difficult people blog post, we will explore more about dealing with people and how to focus on those all important communication patterns that difficult people display right before your eyes.
