Dealing with Difficult People and Why You Should Handle Difficult People

by DrJudy on

Difficult People are out there. If you have never had to deal with difficult people, then be assured that you will certainly come across some of these people throughout your life.

THERE WILL ALWAYS BE DIFFICULT PEOPLE OUT THERE

You do need to recognize that we all are dealing with difficult people at some time in our lives and so do you, particularly in your working life. To suggest that you have never come across, dealt with or run from a difficult person, just might be looking at things with blinkers or a blindfold on.

Many of our clients in both their workplace and their personal lives, often believed that they needed to get on with everyone and that if they admitted that they found someone to be difficult, then in some way they had failed. They had failed to handle the difficult person, manage the difficult behavior and were just incompetent in dealing with people in general. So they avoided this feeling of incompetence by denying that they ever found other people to be difficult and ran away from conflict.

A REALITY CHECK ON DEALING WITH PEOPLE

But now might just be the time for a reality check. We just are not all the same – there are some people you will like, others not so much – we are all different!

The longer you deny that you just might find some other people to be difficult, frustrating and downright unbearable – then the longer you deny yourself the opportunities to develop strategies to deal with your own reactions and handle that difficult behavior.

ADMIT YOU’VE MET SOME DIFFICULT PEOPLE

Once you admit that you find someone to be difficult, you can stop suppressing your feelings and reactions to that person and begin to plan the strategies you will use to deal with your own reactions and how you will handle their appalling behavior.

YOUR WASTING TIME WHEN YOU COULD BE PLANNING

So decide now to stop wasting time, recognize that you are human and you do find some people and their behavior to be difficult – give yourself permission. Then let’s get on with planning just what you want to do about it!
