Dealing with Difficult People and the Most Important Point to Consider

by DrJudy on

In our Dealing with People Articles and Difficult People Blog Posts we’ve covered a wide range of ideas in dealing with these people.

DEALING WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE AND THE CHALLENGES

Certainly, dealing with people in general and particularly difficult people is a very challenging, pressure-filled and demanding process.

We have considered a range of different types of difficult people. We also considered a variety of different strategies and techniques in handling difficult people.

THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT

So from all the articles and blog posts in the previous year relating to difficult people what is one of the most important points to remember? One of the most vital points for you when dealing with people you find awkward, frustrating, demanding and annoying is that it is not the person but the behavior.

FOCUS ON THE BEHAVIOR NOT JUST THE PERSON

In order to develop effective ways to deal with difficult people in your life you must focus on their behavior. Rather than concentrating on the person, focus on clearly defining the behavior that you are finding difficult. Instead of seeing this person as having a ‘bad attitude’ which makes it really hard to work out what to do. Be very clear on what their behavior is that is causing you so much distress. When you define this behavior such as ‘this person always interrupts me before I can finish a sentence’, now you can work out how to deal with this constant interrupting.

DEALING WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE AND THEIR SPECIFIC BEHAVIOR

So from now on, aim to concentrate on the behavior that you are finding distressing. Then take up the challenge in dealing with difficult people to develop strategies to deal with this behavior. Be very clear on dealing with the difficult behaviors not the difficult people.
